Scaffolding Staircases

Haki and Layher staircases are now more commonly used for access as they provide safe access. The Haki Staircase is a prefabricated system with adjustable feet and varied lengths of stair treads to allow us to install a platform at the correct height to access a scaffold lift or floor level of an existing building. Edge protection handrails are included with the system and if required we can also install kick boards if the staircase is to be used by the public. We can provide a fully approved temporary fire exit staircase if the existing fire exit is being renewed or repaired and if required a full design can be carried out prior to installation for approval.

Temporary Scaffold Staircases for Safe Site Access

Safe access and egress are critical on every construction project. While traditional ladder access may be suitable for some applications, modern construction sites increasingly require temporary staircases to improve safety, productivity, and compliance.

At Cheshire Scaffolds Ltd, we supply and install Haki and Layher staircase systems for commercial developments, industrial facilities, refurbishment projects, residential construction, infrastructure works, and fire remediation schemes across Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, and the wider North West.

Our temporary staircase solutions provide safe, convenient access for operatives, contractors, inspectors, and visitors while reducing the risks associated with repeated ladder use. Haki and Layher systems are widely recognised throughout the construction industry for their flexibility, durability, and ability to accommodate complex access requirements.

Applications for Temporary Staircase Systems

Temporary staircase towers can be installed as standalone structures or integrated into a larger scaffolding system.

Common applications include:

Our staircase systems can be adapted to suit varying building heights, restricted access locations, and phased construction programmes, ensuring safe movement throughout the duration of the project.

Temporary Fire Escape Staircases

Many refurbishment and remediation projects require existing fire exits to be closed temporarily while repair or replacement works are undertaken.

Cheshire Scaffolds Ltd can provide fully designed temporary fire escape staircases that maintain safe emergency evacuation routes throughout the construction programme. Our team works closely with principal contractors, site managers, and fire safety consultants to ensure access arrangements remain compliant and operational.

These systems are particularly valuable for:

  • Occupied residential buildings
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Educational buildings
  • Commercial offices
  • Student accommodation
  • Public sector buildings

Maintaining safe emergency egress is often one of the most important considerations on occupied projects, and our temporary staircase solutions can be designed specifically around these requirements.

Benefits of Haki & Layher Staircase Systems

Modern staircase systems offer significant advantages compared with traditional ladder access.

Improved Site Safety

Staircase systems provide safer access for personnel carrying tools, materials, and equipment while reducing the risk of slips and falls.

Faster Site Movement

Temporary staircases allow multiple operatives to access working areas quickly, helping improve productivity on busy construction projects.

Public Access Solutions

Where public access is required, additional features including handrails, kickboards, and protection measures can be incorporated to create safe temporary access routes.

Flexible Design

Staircase systems can be integrated into complex scaffold structures, high-rise developments, and difficult-access environments.

Industry guidance increasingly recognises stair towers as a safer alternative to ladder access on many construction projects due to improved access and emergency evacuation capabilities.
