Scaffolding Project at Manchester Airport Control Tower

Cheshire Scaffolding Ltd were appointed to provide specialist scaffolding services to support works at the Manchester Airport Air Traffic Control Tower, one of the most recognisable structures on the airport skyline. Standing approximately 60 metres tall, the tower is the second tallest air traffic control tower in the UK and provides 360-degree views across the airport and surrounding region.

Working within the secure environment of an operational international airport presented a number of logistical and safety challenges. The scaffolding design had to allow safe access for contractors while ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations, strict security protocols, and the continued safety of personnel working at height.

Project Scope

Our role involved the design, supply, and installation of a bespoke scaffolding system to enable maintenance and refurbishment works to be carried out safely on the tower structure. Given the height and exposed nature of the tower, the scaffold system required careful engineering to provide both stability and safe working platforms for the project team.

The scaffold was designed to provide:

• Safe working access to key areas of the control tower structure
• Stable platforms for inspection, maintenance, and repair works
• Safe access routes for operatives and materials
• Protection measures for workers and surrounding infrastructure

Due to the height and prominent position of the tower within the airfield environment, particular consideration was given to wind loading, access arrangements, and compliance with aviation safety restrictions.

Scaffold Design & Installation

Cheshire Scaffolding’s in-house design team worked closely with the main contractor and site management team to develop a scaffold structure capable of meeting the technical requirements of the project while maintaining strict safety standards.

The design incorporated a tailored scaffold configuration using tube and fitting systems, allowing flexibility around the tower’s cylindrical form and complex structural features. Our experienced operatives carefully erected the scaffold in phases to ensure continued stability and safe access throughout the installation process.

Working within an operational airport environment required meticulous planning, including coordinated deliveries, restricted working zones, and compliance with site-specific safety procedures.

Health and safety remained a primary focus throughout the project. All scaffolding works were carried out in accordance with current industry standards and best practice guidance.
